Where to stay in Chamonix Ski Resort for accommodation

Chamonix might not be a huge city or metropolitan area but it certainly has a way with tourists and it is one of the largest communes in France.  It was the very first location of the Winter Olympics back in 1924 and one of the oldest ski resorts in France.  A trip to this part of France is all about the outdoors, fresh air and taking in the spectacular view of some of the world's most beautiful mountains.  The rates for accommodation in Chamonix vary quite a bit depending on where you wish to stay.  You will find every kind of option from apartments and hotels to chalets, B&Bs and resort accommodation.

Aiguille du Midi Cable Car, Chamonix

For just about every visitor, a trip up the Aiguille du Midi cable car / tramway is number one on their list of things to do in Chamonix.  This is an amazing and thrilling ride that will take you from 3000 to 12000 feet above sea level in just 20 minutes!  It is a two part ride that consists of a trip up on the lower cable car, a short walk up some stairs and then the upper cable car.

While this trip is extremely scenic, it is also not ideal for anyone who suffers from vertigo, a heart condition or general fear of heights.  There are some points where the cable car rises at a 75 degree angle and, because it travels so quickly, the rapid drop in atmospheric pressure can cause light-headedness.

Booking this trip should be done at least one full day in advance due to popular demand and you must definitely take warm clothes along with you.  The temperatures at the top ensure snow any ski conditions throughout the year so dress accordingly.

An optional trip during fair weather can be made on the Helbronner summer gondola to a glacier viewing point and other sights.

Things to do in Chamonix, France

Skiing and winter sports are the main activity for tourists and locals.  The Le Brevent Cable Car and Telecabine Panoramique Mont-Blanc will take you to some of the most amazing sightseeing and ski spots in the area.  The Vallee Blanche is another top ski area worth visiting if you are nearby.

One of the most popular sights in the area is the Glacier des Bossons.  It makes for a great day out hiking and a chance to really take in some fresh air along with those sensational views.

For something a little different and relaxing compared to paragliding, skiing, snowboarding and other high energy activities, you can pay the Reserve Naturelle des Aiguilles Rouges a visit.  Here you can take a hike around, enjoy the view of a number of lakes, the surrounding mountains and you might even spot some wildlife too.

Le Paradis des Praz is a great place to spend the day and relax.  This park is a beauty in itself and also offers horseback riding.
